High Pass filter Extreme!

by on Feb.23, 2009, under Art, Speedpainting

The first few speed paintings I did with photoshop weren’t “dreadfully” bad as I had expected, though I did make the mistake of using the High Pass Filter once I had finished it to make the edge of the lines sharp. This was ultimately the wrong thing to do as everyone knows what a bad highpass filter looks like (and if you don’t, you do now). Still for 30 minute painting/sketches I was proud of these when they were made back in 2001 or 2002. I was originally inspired to start speed painting when I started visiting art forums sites like sijun.com , eatpoo.com , and concerptart.org each of which have a thread specifically for speed painting, the sijun one inparticular has 1080 pages of speed paintings.

Thank You Cards

by on Feb.23, 2009, under Art, Illustration

One of the many things we learned in college during the portfolio class was to always send thank you cards to people you interviewed with, so part of that class  was developing a set of thank you cards that you could send out to companies and individuals that you had met with. These were the first few cards I produced. I still often produce new one-off designs when I work with contractors or have a business encounter that warrants a card.

Tribes fan art

Back in the college days I played a lot of Tribes, so far as to actually create and operate a clan and clan matches. I made portraits of everyone in the clan, character concepts and other random things for the web. I think really these were my first official fan art pieces as everything before was came from my own imagination. I had lots of fun learning to translate people into cartoon characters.

Concept Models

by on Feb.22, 2009, under Art, Concept Design

These few models were made while still in school. The alien and beef eater gin were made while teaching a friend the basics of Maya. The other was my first model I built in Maya, which I was learning for a job that I was applying for that specifically required Maya experience. I don’t model much in the way of organic things anymore as I mainly stay with architectural structures which is why I usually prefer to prototype/rough out stuff in Google Sketchup first.
